Pond’s is a popular brand name for face cream. However the company planned to provide an extension to the product which resulted in a debacle. Although people were quite happy with the product, they were not able to digest the name of a fairness cream attached to toothpaste. No one was interested to buy that toothpaste and the company also faced huge competition from the toothpaste giant Colgate. Pond’s other extensions like soaps were successful, but the toothpaste never became a success. The main attribute of toothpaste is taste and that mismatched with the cream which is used externally. Most people believed that ponds belonged to fragrance and freshness and they were not able to link Pond’s name to taste. Other extensions of ponds were successful. The brand however is still a great success after the introduction of fairness cream for men. The brand also is advertised according to the present needs which have made it the one of the best fairness cream.
The company made a blatant mistake by not understanding the essence of the product. However, the company understood its mistake and accepted its defeat and withdrew the product from the market. Can you imagine Colgate coming up with face creams?
